I like to use really hot water for my 1-3 gallon water changes and find the the fry (2 day free swimming) tolerate up to a 6 degree change. Anybody have the same experience?

The key is you need to keep the temp and paramterics from changing drastically. Using hot water will have a tunneling effect; you'll have huge areas of high temperature until the water blends. In the meantime, if a huge volume of hot water disbursed in the area the fry are, and depenging on how hot; you may end up with dead fish.

The fry usually congregate on one side of the tank and I refill 10-20% of the tank volume on the other side. The temp will go up 4-6 degrees. So far no dead fish. I remember years back the water temp changed drastically while I was doing a big water change. Don't know why this happened. It was at my office. The water was very hot to the touch, well above 100. Of the 100 or so fish, some died, but surprisingly more than half survived after I shut the hot water spigot off. These were 7 week old fish, so they would be much more tolerate of temp changes than fry. Still the fry do not seem to suffer from the hot water. I'll continue to do it and report back on what happens.

Not that hot, just enought to raise temp from 78 to 84, just before going to bed. This way the heater is OFF for most of the night. I've done this the last few nights - no ill effects whatsoever - and I save money on electricity.

You have discovered that heating water with your water heater is less expensive than all those electric tube heaters. So why not use your water heater to heat all your tanks? unless you just have a couple. I have done this for years for quite a savings over time. There are others on this forum doing the same now.
I wouldn't recommend putting that hot water strait in the fish tanks unless you turn off all the cold water during your showers. Then I think it would be more understandable to you why the fish are all to one side. The difference being that they can't come popping out the shower when it gets to be too much. So, just stay a while until you understand. |

![]() Lou, really glad your back! You have so much to offer and you are a genius with the fish room systems...don't stay away so long. Ted is right, I tried several times to contact you but the email address you have on your profile does not seem to work. Hope you and your family are doing well. Ken
